The Government Industry Relations (GIR) is a department of the Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN), located in Fort McMurray, Alberta which has been in existence since January 2001.
The GIR is directed by the MCFN Leadership, acts as a liaison between resource developers, operators, government agencies and the community.
The GIR provides the vehicle to bring the MCFN to the table as an equal participant in regional development. This process ensures that the MCFN is able to participate in a meaningful manner.
The MCFN maintains the GIR with resources from Industry Bi-lateral Agreements.
The role of the GIR is to carry out due diligence in all regulatory matters that are in the interest of the MCFN in a manner that allows for sound decision making.
We provide consultation with the MCFN on resource development matters that may impact the MCFN.
We facilitate long-term relationships between industry, government and the MCFN.
We develop capacity within the MCFN, community, and GIR personnel to ensure the MCFN participates in regional development.
The rapid rate of resource development in our region will exhaust the Mikisew Cree First Nation and their limited resources, therefore the GIR department can manage this process and build the necessary capacity to effectively participate and express our concerns effectively.
